The basics of Link Building
Link building is probably one of the most important SEO functions you will deal with and it literally never ends, links come and go so you will have to constantly work at building your links if you want to maintain site growth.
So then lets look at the basic principal and some common places to build links, firstly building random links is okay but not nearly as valuable as targeted links and follow links are obviously better than nofollow links although I have mentioned in the past that they can still be valuable for direct traffic.
An important factor in link building is the HREF or the keyword you target, for example do not hyperlink “click here” when you can rather hyperlink “Keyword you are targeting”. The search engines recognize the HREF and it will improve your ranking for that keyword. That said backlinks are always welcome even if they do not target your keyword directly. Lets Examine the common places to build links back to your site.
One of the oldest methods around and for the most part easy backlinks, the good directories will generally review your site before accepting so you will need to make sure your site is ready before submitting to the big directories like DMOZ
Another easy method for link building and traffic generation, if your content is good enough to make the front page you could see massive traffic spikes and a lot of natural link building will follow
Submitting articles to directories like ezines can not only provide good backlinks but drive a fair amount of traffic as well, you will need to take the time to write the content though but it is well worth the effort.
Similar to article submissions and some of the news wire paid services can take a page viral within minutes and in some cases land you major backlinks from reputable news agencies.
Another old but trusted link building method is posting on forums, if you are active in a community you can build quite a fair amount of backlinks from your signatures alone with the occasional targeted link in the post contents.
If your site has an RSS feed submitting it to the aggregation sites and directories will generate auto pilot backlinks and deliver a fair amount of traffic at the same time.
I have not gone into too much detail on each method since I plan to dedicate a post to each over the next few days but I am sure the list is still valuable for newbies trying to learn how to build backlinks for a site.

Firstly I do not view article marketing as SEO only or a just another traffic channel, I place it in a bigger box encompassing SEO, Traffic Generation, Lead Generation, Brand or Product awareness and Hype or Buzz Creation. A well planned and executed article campaign should target all of these areas.

Building back links can be time consuming and finding suitable places to get your links in can take up the better portion of your day but there are some ways to find good back link ideas quickly however I do feel obliged to a attach a no spam disclaimer to this post by simply saying that I do not advocate spam in any way but I believe that unless you have 12 months or longer to sit around waiting for some search engine love you will need to build your own back links and looking at the competition can save you a lot of time.

A LONG standing discussion has been the various options for dealing with multiple domains for the same content. In other words how do you properly deal with owning more than one version of your domain without hurting your search engine rankings. If you own domain.com and domain.co.uk, domain.info, domain,us etc you will need to understand how certain parking methods can impact your search engine rankings.

Any form of marketing toes a line between tolerated and being considered spam but that line is not always as clear when you are dealing with systems in addition to people. SEO Spam could lead to your sites being removed from search engine indexes which is that last thing you would want.
